During our trip to Beijing, my girlfriend and I wanted to see a quieter and more beautiful side of the Great Wall. We did not want a rushed tour or a place packed with crowds, so we chose Bite Escape’s premium Jinshanling, Gubei Water Town, and Simatai Night Great Wall experience.
The day started with a Range Rover picking us up from our hotel. After several busy days in Beijing, it felt amazing to sit back in such a spacious and comfortable car. Our guide had also prepared fresh fruit and plenty of water for us, which made the whole experience feel thoughtful from the very beginning.
As we left the city, the scenery slowly changed. The buildings disappeared, the mountains came closer, and everything became quieter.
Walking on Jinshanling Great Wall

Jinshanling was exactly how I had imagined the Great Wall before coming to China.
The Wall stretched across the mountains, rising and falling between old watchtowers. There were very few people around, and at times it felt as though we had the whole place to ourselves.
Some sections were steep and uneven, but the views made every step worth it. We could stop whenever we wanted, take photos, and walk at our own pace without being rushed.
One of the best moments came when our guide brought out cold beer and traditional Beijing pastries from Daoxiangcun.
We sat on the Great Wall, surrounded by mountains, sharing the pastries and drinking beer in the breeze. It was such a simple moment, but it became one of my favorite memories from the entire trip.
A beer probably never tastes better than when you are drinking it on the Great Wall of China.
A Slow Afternoon in Gubei Water Town

After leaving Jinshanling, we continued to Gubei Water Town.
The atmosphere was completely different. Stone streets, small bridges, canals, traditional-style houses, and red lanterns made the town feel calm and charming.
We spent the afternoon wandering along the water, exploring small shops and enjoying the slower pace after the morning hike.
We also joined a Chinese lantern-making activity.
It was much more fun than we expected. We carefully assembled and decorated our own lanterns with help from the instructor. My girlfriend’s lantern looked elegant and perfect, while mine was slightly uneven, which gave us something to laugh about for the rest of the day.
Making something together felt more meaningful than simply buying a souvenir. We could take the lanterns home and keep a real memory of the experience.
Simatai Great Wall at Night

As the sun began to set, Gubei Water Town slowly lit up.
Lanterns reflected on the canals, the buildings glowed warmly, and high above the town, the lights of Simatai Great Wall appeared across the dark mountains.
We took the cable car up after sunset.
Seeing the Great Wall at night was completely different from seeing it during the day. The illuminated Wall connected the watchtowers like a golden line across the mountains, while Gubei Water Town sparkled far below.
The atmosphere was quiet, mysterious, and incredibly romantic.
We walked slowly, holding hands and stopping often to enjoy the view. After a full day of hiking, exploring, and making lanterns together, standing on Simatai Great Wall under the night sky felt like the perfect ending.
It was one of those travel moments that no photograph can fully capture.
A Day Worth Remembering
By the time we returned to the car, we were tired but completely happy.
In one day, we had walked along one of the most beautiful sections of the Great Wall, enjoyed beer and Beijing pastries in the mountains, explored Gubei Water Town, made Chinese lanterns together, and watched the Great Wall glow at night.
Choosing the premium package made the experience especially comfortable. The Range Rover transfer, the fruit and water in the car, and the thoughtful preparation from our guide allowed us to relax and enjoy every moment without worrying about transportation or planning.
For couples visiting Beijing, this is easily one of the most romantic and memorable day trips you can take.
For a quieter and more special Great Wall experience, I highly recommend booking the Jinshanling, Gubei Water Town, and Simatai Night Great Wall tour with Bite Escape:
