How to Immerse Yourself in the History of the Balkans

palace in Split, Croatia

The Balkans is the perfect destination for all the history buffs out there as the area is rich in the past and filled with intriguing ruins that can set your imagination and curiosity aflame. If you are interested in immersing yourself in the history of this stunning land but have no idea where to start, here is a guide that could make sure that you do not miss out on any of this area’s wealth of artifacts.

·        Look at the Top Historical Sights

Before you even book your flights over to the Balkans, it is vital that you know exactly what you are heading out there to see. Although it is easy to travel between the countries in the Balkans, with train lines connecting them, the Balkans are vast and so you must know what sights are your priorities. For instance, you might have decided that you want to visit the Palace Of Diocletian in Croatia or the Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro, among the many castles, fortresses, and ancient monuments that are scattered amongst the mountains and valleys of the area. You should not dismiss fictional history, though, with much of Medieval-inspired television shows like Game of Thrones being filmed in Dubrovnik and Split. By researching these in advance, you will be ensuring that you do not miss a top attraction on your trip and end up having regrets.

·        Hire a Crewed Catamaran

Although most of the historical sights of the Balkans are on land, if you are tired of hiking along trails all day and night to see each famous building, you might decide that you want to opt for a mode of transport that is a little bit different. Rather than stay a landlubber for the duration of your trip, you should consider hiring a crewed catamaran in Croatia. This will allow you to enjoy the yachting vacation of your dreams, combined with your passion for culture and the past. Not only will you be able to enjoy bobbing across the gentle waters of the Adriatic Sea, but this will also give you the opportunity to jump from place to place, experiencing the sights in many different places throughout the course of a single trip. You might even be able to get a few titbits of local knowledge from the crew.

·        Go on a Tour

However, while you might be able to explore all the most famous architecture and places of the Balkans yourself, this does not mean that you will naturally know much about them or be able to find out the information that you are curious about when you are there. Instead of traipsing around with no clue what you are looking at, you should consider booking a tour of the area that is focused on its history. This niche tour will allow you to garner the level of knowledge that you desire and will give you the opportunity to ask any questions that you have may have to your tour guide, who will be trained to help you get the best out of the Balkans.
